In the 20th century, the focus of Turkey’s foreign policy orientation was the Western world, and non-Western regions such as Asia did not occupy an important place in Turkey’s foreign policy agenda. By the 21st century, Turkey, under the Justice and Development Party (Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi, AK Party), has adopted a multidimensional foreign policy approach aiming to establish strong relations with all actors in the international area.

Starting with the Fall 2020 semester, KUASIA will admit up to three research affiliates in each academic year. Both current PhD candidates and scholars with a PhD can apply for research affiliation. Research affiliates will be provided with office space and access to library resources at Koç University.

Turkish Ambassador to Beijing, H.E. A. Emin Onen, visited KUASIA on June 2018. He met with KU President, Prof. Umran Inan, and scholars working on China. Ambassador Onen underlined historical connections and deep-rooted cultural relations between Asian countries and Türkiye. He further stated that China is one of the major economic powers in the world today and therefore, it would be impossible to comprehend the global dynamics shaping the next decades to come without understanding China. Ambassador also stressed the need for close collaboration among Turkish and Chinese academia in the field of education in terms of exchange of students and scholars. He added that since Türkiye was chosen as the destination country in China in 2018, it would provide a unique opportunity to bring about many similarities between our two countries.
